Musky, Muskie, or Muskellunge fishing lures and tackle:

Time to get ready for a Mid-west favorite: the "ugly pike" or Musky, Muskie, or Muskellunge - "the fish of ten thousand casts". Fall is prime time for the big musky angler [A1,A2]. Shorter days and colder nights drop water temperatures while sunlight hours wane. This triggers a seasonal reaction in the entire food chain. Musky, who were in deeper waters, may begin to move shallow to become ambusher whereever there are baitfish. Try jerkbaits and crankbaits - perhaps deep diving bait 10 to 20 feet down. Larger MirrOLure, Rapallas, Bombers, and the like are all good. Suick are very popular. A heavy-action, 6-foot, musky casting rod is common. Line is a personal choice but use 30 pound plus if using mono. A steel or other tough leader is the last requirement - 80 pound test plus, 18-24 inch long is common [A1].

For Musky, try:

A strong reel like the Penn Int. Casting Reel with a decently stiff rod.
Baitfish, stick bait imitations like the Bomber Long A's. Suick Lure Co.'s Musky Thriller or Night Walker
A good 50-80 pound fiber line is good
Many anglers use steel/alloy leaders and other types of protective leaders

Muskellunge

Musky, Muskie, or Muskellunge - "the fish of ten thousand casts": The majority of muskie diet is fish with smaller amounts of crayfish, frogs and snakes, mice and muskrats, and other small mammals, ducklings and small birds, plus anything that fits in the mouth. They will take prey items that are up to 30% of their total length. Typical lures are 8-12 inches and but may be as long as 2 feet long.
