Hybrid Striped Bass and Landlocked Striper Fishing and Tackle:

Hybrid striped bass, known by many names including wiper or whiterock bass, is a hybrid between the striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and the white bass (M. chrysops). Landlocked Striped bass are an anadromous fish that have become landlocked or have been stocked in landlocked water. Some stripers could go back to the sea, but for various reasons stay in fresh water.

Fall Hybrid Striper
fishing [A1, A2, A3] is definite favorite for many anglers. In some waters, there are lots of fish, they're relatively easy to find, and they may be larger after bulking up in summer/fall. Look for schools of fish in tributary arms of the lake. Good areas also include underwater humps, river- channel and other drops, submerged standing timber and other structure. Classic winter producers include herring, shad, minnows, and shiners and other live bait . Spoons or plugs are also good for surface fish. Many of the traditional musky and pike plugs such as the Suick Musky Thriller are making their way into hybrid fishing.

Here are some decent tackle tips for catching Hybrid Stripers:
  • Hybrids are not generally picky and will take flashy, moving lures. Productive baits include all types of imitation minnow baits, crank baits, jigs, spoons, both diving and top water lures
  • Although Hybrids are tough fighters heavy tackle is not necessary. Light to medium rods/reels are usually sufficient and will allow for better feel and hook sets; long rods of 5-1/2 to 8 ft are better. Line strength of 8 to 10 pounds, on a standard bait-casting or spinning reel, yields long casts and enough power to bring in running fish.
  • Hybrids are hard hitting fish and often throws the lure before you can set; use the sharpedst hooks and keep them sharp.
  • Hybrid striped bass hooking mortality increases greatly when water temperatures exceed 70oF. Increase survival on released fish by landing fish quickly, reducing handling time, keeping fish in the water as hook is removed, and cutting the line on deeply hooked fish. Try using a circle hook if using live bait.
